I went in winter think that during that time you should definitely go by car to get the most out of your trip. A little Smart Car is ideal for taking the small funny narrow roads and twisty bends! In summer I can imagine it can be a nightmare to fine parking, not to think of possible traffic jams at the main tourist interests. The Lake District lies close to the M6, and you will need to get off at one of two exits depending on where in the Lakes you want to go. The south lakes exit is at junction 36 and the north lakes at junction 40. Travelling east to west is difficult because of the Pennines. The best routes are A69 from Newcastle, A66 from Darlington and A1 and A684 from the Yorkshire Dales. A cool experiance is to cross Lake Windermere by ferry, the journey is quite a small one, but it is well worth taking. The ferry only holds 16 cars so sometimes a cue is inevitable.
Parking - by Gwen from Harrismith S Africa
We hired one of those new little cars and it was ideal to get in and out of those twisty, little country lanes. We got to some out of way places too which was wonderful. The only problem we had was finding parking, it was so busy and there were hordes of people but it was good.

Lake District Overview
Of all the fantastic countryside in England the Lake District is arguably the most stunning. Situated in the north west of the country, the Lake District has an incredible amount to offer and should not be missed. The region's combination of dales, lakes and peaks attracts over 10 million visitors a year.

There is an abundance of choice in the region with wonderful towns, picturesque villages and unforgettable lakeside resorts. The Lake District has so much to see that it can be hard to choose, but don't worry whichever area you pick you will not be disappointed.

Lake District Essentials
Ambleside - The welcoming town of Ambleside is at the heart of the southern lakes region of the park, and offers the perfect base to enjoy the natural riches of the area. Not only is the town surrounded by majestic countryside but it also offers some interesting attractions such as Bridge House and the Ambleside Museum.

Windermere - The town of Windermere is the major access point to, and a great base for enjoying, Lake Windermere, the longest lake in England. Lake Windermere offers a wonderful experience with superlative scenery and enjoyable attractions.

Scafell Pike - Scafell Pike is the highest peak in England, and one of four in the Lake District that top 3000 ft. Scafell Pike offers a wonderful experience with incredible views and excellent opportunities for hiking and climbing.

Hawkshead - This picturesque village is one of the most beautiful places in the Lake District National Park. Set amongst woodland, Hawkshead is almost to perfect with lovely buildings and a tranquil atmosphere. There are also some interesting attractions in the village such as the Church of St Michael.

Coniston - This wonderful village is one of the most attractive in the Lake District region. There are some very interesting attractions and the sumptuous Coniston Water is close by.
